Release of Maoist leaders demanded

HYDERABAD: The CPI (Janashakti) has criticised the arrest of leaders of Maoist party, Virasam and AIFTU and demanded their immediate release.

Bahujan, in-charge secretary of the party, in a statement on Sunday wanted those leaders who were not produced before courts also be freed.

While urging people to take cognisance of real motives of the Government, he said they should fight its `destructive' and `fascist' policies. - Staff Reporter

Minimum facilities in schools sought

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Progressive Recognised Teachers' Union has demanded creation of minimum facilities in schools in view of their reopening on Monday after summer vacation.

In a statement on Sunday, B. Mohan Reddy, president, and P. Sudhakar Reddy, general secretary, urged the Government to put up classrooms, bathrooms and ensure timely supply of textbooks, drinking water to students and construction of labs. - Staff Reporter

`Distribute temple lands to poor'

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Workers' Association has demanded an ordinance to amend the relevant act for distribution of temple lands to the poor. It wants temple lands to be transferred to the Revenue and Rural Development departments.

K. Krishnamurthy, president, and B. Venkat, general secretary, in a statement on Sunday called upon the Government to take up allotment of temple lands to the poor as part of the second phase of land distribution.

Toddy tappers put Government on notice

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Toddy Tappers' Association has asked the Government to to withdraw GO 767, which banned the sale of toddy in the radius of 50 km from toddy tappers cooperative societies where there are no trees.

The association president and former MP, B. Dharmabhiksham, warned the Government of serious consequences if the Government failed to withdraw the GO. He regretted that after the GO was issued, sale of toddy in parts of twin cities was affected and hundreds of tappers lost their livelihood. - Staff Reporter

Admission test

HYDERABAD: Over 14,000 students attended the admission test conducted by Sri Chaitanya institutions for entry into long-term coaching of medical and engineering courses in Hyderabad and Vijayawada.

B.S. Rao, Director, Sri Chaitanya institutions, said students who could not get good ranks in their first attempt took the test for long-term coaching. - Staff Reporter

Communist leader dead

HYDERABAD: B. Parvatamma (82), the first generation Communist leader of Anantapur district and sister of the CPI leader, V.K. Adinarayana Reddy, died on Sunday in Anantapur.

Parvatamma, who was born in a zamindar's family of Chimalavagupalle village in Tadipatri mandal, had participated in many struggles in support of agricultural workers, railwaymen, employees and women. She set up vocational centres and ITIs for women.

Death condoled

HYDERABAD: The State Janata Dal (S) has condoled the death of Kata Janardhan Rao, freedom fighter and socialist leader.

A meeting will be held at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram here on June 13. Nayani Narasimha Reddy, Minister for Technical Education, will be among the speakers, according to K. Prabhakar Reddy, general secretary of the party. - Staff Reporter

Free medical camp

ADILABAD: The Kotapalli police on Sunday conducted a free medical camp at Babberachelka village as part of the `Police Mee Kosam' programme. Doctors from Mancherial and Chennur conducted health check ups to about 1,000 patients from surrounding areas. Medicines worth Rs. 50,000 were distributed free of cost. - Staff Reporter

Sports meet inaugurated

ADILABAD: The Adilabad Superintendent of Police, Kripanand Tripathi Ujela, on Sunday inaugurated the District Police Sports meet here at the AR head quarters. He underscored the need for better health conditions among policemen.

Killed in freak incident

KARIMNAGAR: In a freak incident, a couple reportedly killed a person suspecting him to be a robber in Rudrangi village of Chandurthi mandal on Saturday night. According to the Vemulawada CI, K Nageshwara Rao, a farmer, P Narayana (60), had stored fodder in his cattle shed. Everyday some unidentified person was stealing the fodder. In order to catch the culprit, the farmer along with his wife, Amrutha, stood on guard, when the victim, L. Boraiah (49), entered the premises and allegedly stole the fodder. When the couple raised an alarm, the man took to his heels. Suspecting him to be a robber, they hit him with a stick. He succumbed to the injuries. - Staff Reporter
