Boy's heroic act saves 32 lives

Staff Reporter

ELURU: The grit and determination demonstrated by an 11-year-old boy saved 32 persons in a marriage party when a mini van turned turtle near Kalaparru in Pedapadu mandal on the Chennai-Kolkata national highway in the small hours of Sunday. Two persons, Mamidi Suri Babu (21) and Appayamma (70), were crushed to death.

The groom, Kurram Dasu Suri Babu (21), was one among 27 persons who sustained simple injuries while the rest escaped unhurt. The accident occurred when a mini-van carrying a 35-member marriage party from Namavaram in Visakhapatnam district to Kanaka Durga temple in Vijayawada where the wedding was scheduled for Sunday, overturned.

Siva, a Class VI student, who was one among the marriage party, was jolted out of sleep when the accident occurred and managed to get out of the vehicle. He made his way to the highway in pitch darkness in a bid to ensure medical attention for those trapped in the van. He stopped a lorry and informed the crew about the accident who in turn passed on the message to a patrolling team.
