Rajasthan to promote Ayurveda

Special Correspondent

Proposal to strengthen hospitals to provide better services

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government has decided to initiate extensive measures for bringing Ayurveda to the mainstream medicinal system and provide all resources for development of the traditional Indian practice based on ancient wisdom. All Ayurveda hospitals in the State are proposed to be strengthened to provide better services to the patients.

Two Ministers of the State highlighted the positive aspects of Ayurveda while inaugurating an Ayurvedic Rasayan Shala (laboratory) in Udaipur over the week-end. The "encouraging trend" of foreigners finding Ayurveda useful for treatment of diseases without harmful side-effects was a testimony to the utility of the ancient Indian system, they felt.

The Medical and Health Minister, Digambar Singh, said Ayurveda had been neglected because of "mindless" imitation of western practices in the country. "The Ayurveda practitioners should extend a helping hand in the conservation of this system by providing an efficient treatment," he said and assured that new buildings would be constructed to house the Ayurveda hospitals.

The Home Minister, Gulab Chand Kataria, said Ayurveda should not be considered inferior to allopathy and all attempts should be made to regain its "lost glory". He called for a change in the outlook in favour of utilising local resources for treatment of diseases. The Ayurvedic laboratory established by the State Government in Udaipur has all facilities for preparation of medicines with the help of modern equipment.
