`Achuthanandan most prominent leader'

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has said that the constitution of the new party State secretariat does not in any way imply weakening of the party Polit Bureau member V.S. Achuthanandan.

"He is our most prominent leader in Kerala. As far as the party is concerned, he is number one. Then where does the question of his getting weakened arise?" Mr. Vijayan asked in response to a question at a press conference here today.

On whether there was criticism in the State committee about the party's failure to field a candidate in the Rajya Sabha election against A. K. Antony, Mr. Vijayan admitted that it was a failure and that nobody would claim otherwise.

"Our practice is to hold deliberations on all such issues. That could not be done as everybody was busy with the two by-elections. But it is still a failure," he said.
