Ahamed to take up Indians' plight

New Delhi: Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed has said that he would take up with foreign affairs and security authorities in Sharjah as well as the Government of UAE the issue of over 100 Indian nationals who were apprehended in the State in the last few months after their passports were found to be fake. These people, who had gone to Sharjah with promises of greener pastures said, they were asked to hand over their passports on arrival there by local agents who gave them fake passports. Their complaints were brought to the notice of the Minister in Kozhikode on Sunday before his departure for Doha where he is leading the Indian delegation for the G-77 meet. — PTI

Three drowned

PATHANAMTHITTA: Two girls and a youth were drowned in the Pampa and Achenkoil rivers respectively on Sunday afternoon. Asha, 19, and her sister, Paru, 15, hailing from Thiruvananthapuram, had got drowned in the Pampa river while they were taking bath at Varavoor Mannethu `kadavu' in Ranni around 2.30 p.m., the police said. Priyarajan, 24, hailing from Thonnalloor in Pandalam panchayat, was drowned while he was taking bath at Kochupurayil `kadavu' in Achenkoil river in Thonnalloor, according to the police. — Staff Reporter

Food research centre

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A food research centre is to come up shortly at Konni in Pathanamthitta district, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Adoor Prakash has said. Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, he said that this institution would require 100 acres of land. The Union Government will assist the project. — Special Correspondent

Training programme

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Software Technology Parks of India here, a society under the Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India, in collaboration with Real Time Systems Inc., U.S.A. is organising a three-month training programme on Advanced Embedded Technology for B.Tech., M.C.A., and M.Sc., candidates both employed and job-seekers. The course will provide applied knowledge to the development of microcomputer-based devices integrating latest network technology and standard industrial input and output devices. It is the first practical course in biometrics and cryptographic technology in the country. The combined knowledge of industrial process control, information security and biometrics will create unique opportunities to the trainees in the job market. — Staff Reporter

Irregularities detected

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Anti-Power Theft Squad of the Kerala State Electricity Board detected irregularities estimated to cost Rs. 13 lakhs during inspections in different parts of the State on June 8. Of the 27 cases detected by it, seven were power thefts and the rest were cases of irregularities. Serious irregularities were found in a commercial centre at Kumarapuram here and an industrial establishment at Kondotty in Malappuram. — Special Correspondent

Training for women

Thiruvananthapuram: The Non-Resident Keralites Affairs (NoRKA) Department along with the School of Communications and Management Studies (SCMS) will impart training to women who seek jobs in foreign countries.

The two-week training programme from June 14 would help them get acquainted with the culture, language and tradition of foreign countries, NoRKA Principal Secretary Jiji Thomson said. Training will be provided in basic English, Arabic, house-keeping and hygiene, and in handling sophisticated home appliances.

It was through the Kudumbasree units that the women had been selected for the training, he said in a press release here today. The course fee will be equally borne by NoRKA and Kudumbasree. — UNI

Dalit federation plans dharna

KOLLAM: Calling upon the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre to honour the promise of reservation in the private sector, the Kerala Dalit Federation (KDF) will hold a demonstration in front of the Head Post Office here on June 17. The demonstration will also seek the intervention of the Union Government for the release of PDP leader Abdul Nasser Maudani from jail. The programme will be inaugurated by the KDF State president, P. Ramabhadran. The district president of the party, K. Bharathan, will preside. Mr. Maudani's father, T.A. Abdul Samad, Janata Dal leader C.K. Gopi, State president of the Muslim Employees Cultural Association M.A. Samad, district president of the Dheevara Shaba K.K. Radhakrishnan and PDP district president Kollurvila Nazimuddin will speak.

Telecom centre being shifted

Holy mast installation

PATHANAMTHITTA: The installation of the golden holy mast at the Chakkulathukavu Bhagavathy Temple will be held in the auspicious muhurthom between 12 noon and 12.45 p.m. on Monday. Tantri Kanataru Neelakantaru will lead the rituals. Chief priest Radhakrishnan Namboodiri and head priest Manikkuttan Namboodiri will perform special rituals on the occasion. — Staff Reporter

One killed in accident

NEDUMBASSERY: One person was killed and another sustained injuries when a car went out of control and rammed into a hotel at Athani, near Nedumbassery airport, on Sunday morning. The deceased, Abdul Rahiman, 20, resident of Thiruvillamala in Thrissur district, was an employee of the hotel. The car driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle owing to over-speeding. — Staff Reporter

Adalat postponed

KOCHI: The Kanayannur taluk-level adalat slated to be held on Tuesday by the District Collector and the Police Commissioner has been postponed. The new date will be announced later, according to the District Collector. — Staff Reporter
