HYDERABAD: The Chairman of the Official Languages Commission, A.B.K. Prasad on Sunday underlined the need to mould information technology to complement the growth of Indian languages. Speaking at a workshop on `Development of software in Indian languages' at Literacy House, Andhra Mahila Sabha, Dr. Prasad said it has not been easy for the vernacular press to emerge in India, as journalists had to fight technological odds all through. The theme of the workshop was Government IT policy vis-à-vis Indian languages and scripts. "If we push for the privatisation of education, we will only be ensuring that Indian languages are completely sidelined. Initiatives like the development of software that facilitates learning Telugu and other languages are imperative for sustaining the language," he suggested. Explaining the practical side of the technology, Desikachary, Senior Database administrator, said it was possible for the keyboard to be customised to display Indian languages.
