Police to reintroduce `nakabandi' from today

Staff Reporter

Security checks for three days

BANGALORE: Prompted by the success of "nakabandi" (security barricades) last month, the city police have decided to re-introduce it from Monday.

The Commissioner of Police, Ajai Kumar Singh, has asked the police to introduce "nakabandi" at prominent places. The security checks will be made for three days between 7 p.m. and midnight.

The police had resorted to "nakabandi" in the first week of May and continued it for two weeks. Twenty-eight persons involved in chain snatching and other offences were caught during this period. But police drew flak for causing traffic blockades on various roads.

Live bands

The owners of live-band joints and discotheque have applied to the Commissioner of Police for fresh licence and renewal of their existing licences.

The State Government, by a notification of May 23, brought live-band joints, discotheques and cabarets under the purview of public entertainment.

The Commissioner is empowered to grant licence considering public interest, status and antecedents of the applicant, availability of parking place, impact on law and order, vicinity of the place to educational and religious institutions.

The owners of these public entertainment joints were given 30 days from May 23.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration), B. Shivakumar, has been asked to receive the applications. According to a senior police official, the applications are accepted only with necessary "no-objection certificates" from Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board and the Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services. The last date for submission of applications is June 23.
