KOCHI: The bridge-cum-regulator at Manjummel was inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Sunday. Inaugurating the bridge, the Chief Minister said the unemployment problem in the country was yet to be solved. He said the Government had failed to implement projects for solving unemployment. The Chief Minister said the Manjummel bridge-cum-regulator project was completed three months ahead of schedule and at Rs.1.5 crores less than the original estimate. Water Resources Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan presided over the function. Sebastian Paul, MP, district panchayat president John P. Mani, and Kochi Refineries Limited managing director B.K. Menon offered felicitations. The 66-metre-long bridge-cum-regulator is expected to solve the problem of entry of saline water into Periyar river. Every year, the influx of saline water into the river causes damage to the water supply schemes for domestic, industrial and agricultural use. The bridge has also been a long-standing demand of the residents of Manjummel. The project was estimated to cost Rs.9.08 crores, but the final cost came to Rs.7.25 crores. The project, formulated in the early Eighties, could not be implemented owing to lack of funds. Kochi Refineries Limited recently came forward to complete the bridge-cum-regulator.
