KOCHI: The setting up of the solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram is likely to be delayed further. The construction and other activities related to the plant will be cleared only after an expert committee studies the proposal and forms a comprehensive plan for the development of the area. This was decided at a meeting convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Sunday following the opposition from T.H. Mustafa, Kunnathunadu MLA, to the setting up of the plant at Brahmapuram and dumping of waste there. The committee, to be headed by Babu Jacob, adviser to the State Government, will have K.V. Thomas and T.H. Mustafa, MLAs, C.M. Dinesh Mani, Kochi Mayor, president of the Vadavukode-Puthencruz village panchayat and president of the Ernakulam district panchayat as its members. The committee will also visit a plant at Bangalore, which uses the same technology as will be adopted at Brahmapuram, on the suggestion of Mr. Chandy. The Corporation had earlier approached the Chief Minister with a request to convene a meeting with Mr. Mustafa as some of the residents of the area had prevented the corporation officials from dumping waste in the area. Though the Chief Minister assured Mr. Mustafa that all necessary facilities, including piped drinking water, would be provided to the residents, the MLA did not relent. Once the plant is set up, drinking water and air will be polluted and the proposed Smart City project will not materialise, Mr. Mustafa said. Mr. Mustafa demanded that all activities related to the plant such as construction of bunds and compound walls should be stopped until the committee submits its report. Meanwhile, the Health Standing committee of the corporation has cleared the proposal submitted by the Hyderabad-based firm for setting up the plant. The Corporation Council, which is to meet on Monday, is expected to approve the project.
