THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Parts of the city that witnessed a 48-hour water supply disruption two weeks ago on account of the relaying of the main pipeline at Pazhavangady will face a similar disruption a week from now as the Kerala Water Authority prepares to relay a water line at Thakaraparambu. The relaying of the water pipes is being done as part of the ongoing flood-control project for the East Fort and Thampanoor areas. There are three cast iron water lines that lie across the Amayizhanchan canal at Thakarapparambu; of this the biggest, measuring 700 mm across, will be raised and relaid across the canal. As was done at Pazhavangady, the section of the line across the canal will be cut away and replaced with a length of pipe made of mild steel. The work on this line is expected to commence on Sunday, June 19. Here too the resulting disruption of water supply to many places including Sreekanteswaram, Fort, Sreevaraham, Manacaud, Attukal, Muttathara, Poonthura and Thiruvallam is expected to last for two days.
Precautionary measure
"We will have to shut down supply to the whole of the low-lying zone from the Vellayambalam tank as the relaying work at Thakaraparambu involves cutting and welding. At Pazhavangadi, even after shutting down the entire line there was flow of water from inter-connected lines that forced us to postpone the work. We don't want a similar situation this time," the KWA executive engineer (PH division) K. Sasi told The Hindu on Sunday. The alignment of this pipe would also be changed during the relaying, keeping in mind the flyover that would be built across the main road from Thakaraparambu to the Powerhouse junction, he added.
Disruption in airport area
At Pattoor, a section of the 500 mm line that lies across the canal will be cut away and replaced with a length of mild steel pipe. This will result in a two-day disruption of water supply to such areas as the airport, Veli, Shangumughom and the VSSC. This work is expected to commence in a week's time.
