CPI wants improved water supply

Party city council leaders stage demonstration

VIJAYAWADA: The city council of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has asked the authorities of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) to take immediate steps to improve water supply in areas falling under circle I of the corporation.

The CPI on Monday urged officials concerned to restore public water taps in the area, besides steps to repair defunct borewells.

Continuing protest against alleged official apathy in providing basic amenities to residents, leaders and activists of the city council staged a demonstration in front of the circle I office. The Vijayawada West MLA, Sheik Nasarvali, and other leaders criticised officials for remaining indifferent to the plight of residents despite several representations.

Negligence on the part of officials was a result of the inefficient handling of people's problems by the Congress and the TDP. Instead of admitting the lapses, TDP leaders made it a habit to criticise the Left parties. It was during the tenure of the Left parties that the city was developed, they said.

In a memorandum submitted to the Assistant Municipal Commissioner later, the CPI demanded that the authorities provide drinking water connections to residents of slums and hill slopes on payment of Rs. 1,200.

They wanted the authorities to increase the capacity of motors pumping water to hill slopes to remove the problems faced due to low pressure.
