NEW DELHI: Tania Sachdev completed the formalities of becoming a Woman Grandmaster (WGM) when she made her final norm by drawing the 10th and penultimate round with Hungary's Lajos Seres in the First Saturday chess tournament in Budapest on Monday. Tania achieved a nine-game norm from the 11-player round-robin competition. She had gained her first norm on winning the Asian junior title in 2002 and the second one last year in the Abu Dhabi International. With a rating of 2343, she has already met the rating requirement of 2300 for the coveted title. She joins the `WGM Club' comprising S. Vijayalakshmi, Koneru Humpy, Aarthie Ramaswamy, S. Meenakshi, D. Harika, Nisha Mohota and Swati Ghate. Meanwhile, Eesha Karavade's dismal run continued when she lost to William Paschall. In fact, it was Eesha who gained the right to be called the country's eighth WGM after making the third norm in the Dubai Open in April. However, in May, FIDE, the world body of chess, declined to recognise her norm made in the Pune International last year on the grounds that the competition did not meet the stipulation required for a norm-event. The results (10th round): William Paschall (U.S., 5) bt Eesha Karavade (Ind, 1.5); Dimo Werner (Ger, 4) drew with Ivan Farago (Hun, 5); Michael Hoffman (Ger, 4.5); Attila Czebe (Hun, 6) bt Zdenko Stupavsky (Scg, 3.5); Tania Sachdev (Ind, 4.5) drew with Lajos Seres (Hun, 5); Denes Boros (Hun, 5.5) bye.
