PONDICHERRY: Pondicherry Law Minister E. Valsaraj said here on Wednesday that he had urged Union Law Minister H. R. Bharadwaj to sanction a fast track court for the Union Territory at the recent all India Law Ministers conference in Shimla. Mr. Valsaraj told mediapersons that with 5,000 criminal and 10,500 civil cases pending in local courts, the need to have the fast track court was felt.He had also urged sanction for a Family Court for the Karaikal region and sought Rs. 14 crores for the construction of the court building on a new site inside the Swadeshi Cotton Mills here.
Construction workers
Mr. Valsaraj, who is also in charge of Labour, said that the State Board for welfare of building and other construction workers had reduced the membership subscription fee from Rs. 240 a year to Rs. 100. Over 3,600 workers were covered under various welfare schemes of the Board.Maternity assistance would be raised to Rs. 1,500 from Rs. 1,000, while the money sanctioned to family of the construction worker to meet part of funeral expenses had been also raised to Rs. 1,500 from Rs. 1,000. The Board had a Rs.1-crore corpus to meet for welfare programmes. It collected one per cent cess from departments such as the PWD and Local Administration taking up infrastructural developmental activities and also from private flat promoters and builders. He said the Franco Indian vocational training institute would now be run by the Pondicherry Administration as the participation of the French Government had been withdrawn. The institute would offer two job-oriented courses on bio-medical engineering. Candidates graduating from the institute in the courses would have placement in Malaysia as a Memorandum of Understanding had been signed Administration with a firm there.
