BELGAUM: The Minister for Water Resources, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, on Tuesday urged the Centre to take steps towards resolving inter-State river water disputes. Addressing a gathering after inaugurating a barrage across the Dudhganga in Chikkodi taluk, he said the State Government is aware of the water requirements of farmers and those living in border areas and is taking legal advice to place its case before the tribunals concerned. There is no dearth of funds for irrigation programmes in the State. The Government is constructing barrages across rivers and bridges for the benefit of farmers, he said. Mr. Kharge urged the Maharashtra Government to increase the annual quantum of water released from Kalammavadi reservoir to 8 tmcft as at least 2 tmcft of the 4tmcft of water released was being utilised by farmers and residents in borders areas within Maharashtra. Responding to the Minister for Agricultural Marketing, Prakash B. Hukkeri, Mr. Kharge said the suggestion on doubling the annual allocation of Rs. 5 lakhs to gram panchayats could be placed before the Cabinet for discussion. Mr. Hukkeri appreciated the efforts of the officials and contractors in completing the work on the barrage in a year's time. The barrage would help the farmers of the border areas, he added. The Irrigation Minister of Maharashtra, Ramraj Naik Nimbalkar, said that inter-State water disputes could be resolved through negotiations. Ramesh L. Kudachi, MLA; Ramesh Jarkiholi, MLA; the zilla panchayat President, S.F. Doddagoudar; and Kakasaheb Patil, MLA, were present on the occasion.
