Headmasters vow to improve performance of Government schools

Special Correspondent

Significantly better results at SSLC level: official

VILLUPURAM: At a meeting held here recently to review the performance of the government and Adi Dravidar welfare schools in the 10th and Plus-Two examinations, the headmasters vowed to achieve 80 and 70 per cent results respectively in the next academic year.

The Chief Educational Officer, S.Kannappan, convened the meeting to take stock of the situation and to devise the means to better the performance. The CEO noted that the schools in the district were bettering their performance in the past three years: for instance, this year the district had achieved 66.5 per cent results in the Plus-Two examinations, and 71 per cent in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examinations.

There was a significant improvement in the performance at the SSLC level, as it had gradually increased from 48 per cent in 2003 to 71 per cent in 2005. The schools in the Tindivanam educational district had crossed the Rubicon, as the results in none of the schools there was below 40 per cent.

Mr Kannappan observed that last year, as many as 25 schools in the Tindivanam educational district scored below 40 per cent results.

This time, the number of schools that stayed below 60 per cent results was only 60 in the entire revenue district (comprising Villupuram and Tindivanam educational districts).

During the one-to-one interaction between the CEO and the headmasters, the latter had taken the vow to achieve 70 per cent results in the Plus Two level and 80 per cent in the SSLC next year.

They confided that there were particularly three reasons that came in the way of improving the performance: first, late appointment of teachers, secondly, certain teachers lacked motivation, and finally, the students from the rural areas were slow in learning.

The CEO told them that now all the post-graduate teacher posts were filled up and therefore, they should fully concentrate on producing better results on par with private schools.

He called upon the teachers to plan their teaching schedule and adhere to it.

Mr Kannappan advised the teachers to conduct subject-wise special classes, in turn, on Saturdays for three hours.

This would help in early completion of the syllabus, besides providing an opportunity for the students to clear their doubts.

The CEO said the teachers were now adequately familiar with the new syllabus, as he had arranged for their training in collaboration with the Theivanai Ammal College for Women at Villupuram.

He expressed confidence that the knowledge-based new syllabus would enhance the standard of education and enable the students to perform well in the qualifying as well as competitive examinations.
