KOLLAM: Work in the plantation sector in the district came to a grinding halt following the strike by over 20,000 estate employees on Wednesday. The strike was under the banner of the CITU, AITUC, INTUC and the KTUC. In a statement, Kollam District Plantation Workers Association general secretary S. Jayamohan said if the State Government fails to intervene, the strike will be intensified and carried forward indefinitely.
Demands
The demands included wage revision, payment of DA dues, and a welfare fund board for small-scale estate workers. The estates affected by the strike included Rehabilitation Plantations, State Farming Corporation, AVT, Ambanad, Nagamala and Be Be. The estate workers also held demonstrations.
Intervention sought
In a statement, CPI(M) district secretary K. Rajagopal called upon the State Government to intervene and settle the strike. He alleged that the Government was taking sides with the management. Despite an appreciable increase in the prices of rubber, the wages of the employees have not been hiked and this cannot be justified.
