State Government objects to transfer of woman missing case to CBI

Bench grants one more month for CB-CID to complete probe

MADURAI: The State Government on Wednesday objected to the transfer of a woman missing case probed by a special investigation team of the Crime Branch-CID to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Accepting the arguments of the State, a Division Bench comprising Justice K.P. Sivasubramaniam and Justice S.K. Krishnan granted one more month to the State agency to complete the probe and file final report.

The Bench, hearing a habeas corpus petition moved by the husband of the 34-year-old missing school teacher from Kulithalai in Karur district, on January 5 directed the Director-General of Police, A.X. Alexander, to appoint an efficient officer to probe the involvement of an All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MLA, Papasundaram, in the case and to personally supervise the investigation.

Special team

A special team headed by C. Sridhar, Superintendent of Police, CB-CID, was formed and for the past five months the team had been seeking extension of time to complete the probe.

When the petition came up for hearing on Wednesday, the husband of the missing woman moved another petition seeking to transfer the case to the CBI.

According to him, though his wife was missing since October 19, the State agency was not able to make a breakthrough.

`Probe in crucial stage'

The State public prosecutor, K. Duraisamy, said there was no need to transfer the case as the investigation was in a crucial stage.

While a polygraph test had been conducted on four prime suspects in the case, brain mapping and narco-analysis tests were also to be done to arrive at a just conclusion and hence the agency needed two more months' time to complete the probe.

However, declining to grant a long adjournment, the Bench posted the matter to July 13 for the police to submit their final report.
