CHENNAI: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has submitted charge sheets against seven persons former Ministers and former MLAs for allegedly possessing wealth "disproportionate to known sources of their income." While the final report against S. Kannappan, former PWD Minister and founder of Makkal Tamil Desam, has been sent to the Special Court in Singaravelar Maaligai here, the other charge sheets were filed in the courts of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in the respective districts. Mr. Kannappan has been charged with possessing wealth to the tune of Rs.11,10,41,252. Mr. Kannappan's wife, mother, two brothers, two sisters and mother-in-law are among the 20 other accused in the charge sheet, a senior DVAC official said. Charge sheets have also been filed against K. Sundaram and Gomathi Srinivasan, former Ministers, and R. Gandhi (Ranipet), C. Shanmugham (Alandur), A. Marimuthu (Vanur) and C. Subramani (Tiruvallur), former MLAs. The charge against Mr. Sundaram is that he accumulated wealth to the tune of Rs. 26.19 lakhs. His wife and two brothers-in-law have been cited as accused in the charge sheet filed in the court of the CJM, Chengalpattu. Ms. Srinivasan has been charged with possessing assets valued at Rs. 13.22 lakhs. Mr. Gandhi, his wife and son figure in the charge sheet submitted to the court of the CJM, Vellore. He has been charged with acquiring wealth totalling Rs.3.92 crores. The charge against Mr. Shanmugham is that he possessed wealth to the tune of Rs.1.76 crores. His wife and son are the other accused. Mr. Marimuthu, his wife and son have been cited as accused in the charge sheet for allegedly possessing assets valued at Rs.12.66 lakhs. The charge against Mr. Subramani is that he acquired assets to the tune of Rs.25.71 lakhs. His wife and two sons also figure as accused. The case against Mr. Kannappan was registered by the DVAC in 1996 and the First Information Report was pending in the Special Court here, set up during the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam rule. The charge sheet against him is the fourth to be submitted by the police to the Special Court after the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regained power in the State. The other charge sheets were with regard to the disproportionate wealth cases against V. Panneerselvam, former MLA, Ku. Pa. Krishnan, former Minister, and one in connection with alleged irregularities in the purchase and supply of laboratory articles for government arts and science colleges and aided colleges through the centralised purchase system.
