CHENNAI: The Democratic Progressive Alliance on Wednesday staged demonstrations in all district headquarter towns demanding reinstatement of road mazdoors, reduction of price of rice supplied through public distribution system to Rs. 2 a kg and ensuring availability of all essential commodities in fair price shops.

TNCC president G.K. Vasan, who inaugurated the protests in Chennai, said the huge turnout indicated that the AIADMK rule was nearing its end. If the demands were not met, the DPA would rope in people and plan more agitations.

DPA will ensure their reinstatement

DMK treasurer Arcot N. Veerasamy said the AIADMK Government had defied the High Court on the issue of taking back the road mazdoors. The DPA would fight for the cause of the road mazdoors and ensure that they were reinstated.

DMK deputy general secretary M.K. Stalin listed the "misdeeds" of the AIADMK Government and said it was least interested in solving issues that affected the people.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary N. Varadarajan, Communist Party of India leader R. Nallakannu and Pattali Makkal Katchi president G.K. Mani were among those who participated in the demonstration in the city.

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko took part in the demonstration in front of the Nagapattinam Collectorate. He criticised the Chief Minister for not respecting the court order on reinstatement of road mazdoors.

He said the constituents of the United Progressive Alliance in Tamil Nadu would press the Centre to get Cauvery water for the State from Karnataka.

The State Government should also urge the Centre for getting the Cauvery water.
