SFI demands increase in government quota

Staff Correspondent

HASSAN: Supporting a Statewide bandh call given by the Students' Federation of India (SFI), activists of the district unit of the SFI took out a procession on Tuesday to protest against the decision of the Government to share seats equally with college managements in medical and dental colleges this year as against the 60:40 ratio fixed last year.

The protesters, who raised slogans condemning the decision, also burnt an effigy of the Government in front of the Hemavathi statue. They came in a procession to the office of the Deputy Commissioner and handed over a memorandum to him, urging the Government to reconsider its decision.

Addressing students on the occasion, the secretary of the district unit of the federation, Kantharaju, said that the Government's decision is detrimental to the interests of students. The failure of the Government in setting up the required number of professional colleges is the reason for such a development, he said.

Though the Government permitted the opening of private professional colleges, it failed to set guidelines to control them. The Government is now succumbing to pressure from the private college managements every year, he alleged.

He said that the United Progressive Alliance Governmentand the previous National Democratic Alliance Government failed to neutralise the Supreme Court's decision in the T.M.A. Pai case. He added that Central legislation is the only solution to the problem. He urged the Government to review the decision and share seats in a 75:25 ratio in favour of the Government.

The district unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) also condemned the decision of the Government on sharing seats equally. The vice-president of the federation, Shavel Hameed, said in a release that the new formula will affect the interests of students.
