SINGAPORE: The nomination of Donald Tsang for the territory's top position, under the new set of electoral Guidelines, was declared valid on Wednesday. With the Returning Officer, Madam Justice Carlyle Chu, announcing that 674 members of the Election Committee had "subscribed" to Mr. Tsang's nomination, his chances of becoming the Chief Executive looked up on the basis of the revealed number of those backing his candidature, according to regional observers. However, there was no finality about the outcome by nightfall on Wednesday. The nominations of two other candidates were still being processed, while the candidacy of another person was declared invalid. With the process of nominations set to close by evening on Thursday, an election, if necessary, would be held on July 10.
High position
Mr. Tsang succeeded Hong Kong's Chief Executive, Tung Chee Hwa, on March 10, when the latter resigned, citing his ill health as the reason. Mr. Tung was later elevated to a high position at the Centre in Beijing. Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. The territory is run under the principle of "One Country, Two Systems" on the basis of the relevant Basic Law. The territory's new electoral guidelines were issued on May 27 this year, and Mr. Tsang's critics, as indeed Mr. Tung's during his time as Chief Executive, allege that the Central Government in Beijing orchestrates the politics of Hong Kong.
