Chitra beats Umadevi

Special Correspondent

Chennai: The National stars moved into the next stage without much sweat in the MCC invitation women's snooker tournament at the MCC premises here on Wednesday.

Karnataka's Chitra Magimairaj, former India No. 3, made a shaky start but recovered quickly to get the better of Statemate Umadevi. It was an interesting tussle as the players know each other pretty well. Chitra's concentration improved as the match progressed and she slowly got into her rhythm, compiling decent breaks of 15s and 20s.

Umadevi kept missing easy shots and though she did well in the fourth frame, Chitra went on to clinch the match.

The qualifiers

Tamil Nadu's Vidya Pillai and Neeta Sanghvi of Maharashtra (Group A), Pooja Galundia of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh's Ashwini Puranik (Group B) and Karnataka's Chitra Magimairaj and Uma Devi (Group C) all made it to the next stage.

In Group D, Maharashtra's Heena Khandelwal and Neena Praveen of Tamil Nadu were locked in a keen tussle before the latter prevailed 22-58, 72-61, 59-47, 55-13.
