Agencies pull up socks following student unions' protests over lack of infrastructure

LITERACY DRIVE?: A bullock cart hauling a load of Government text books to a school in Tirupati on Wednesday.

TIRUPATI: With the summer vacations coming to a close, schools are abuzz with activity. Student unions are screaming their heads off over the delay in textbooks reaching Government schools even as their private counterparts have already started the syllabus. Stung by the criticism, the agencies concerned have pulled up their socks and are busy ferrying at least the available stocks of textbooks to the schools in the district.

Meanwhile, work will soon be grounded to provide new premises to 473 schools in Chittoor district under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan. The district got Rs.11.26 crores under the scheme and it will be providing Rs.16 lakhs each to all the mandals to help seven schools in the territory get new premises including toilets.
