CHENNAI: At least 500 temporary structures were destroyed in a fire that broke out in Kargil Nagar at Saathangadu near Manali on Wednesday afternoon. These structures were built by government agencies to rehabilitate residents of north Chennai who were displaced by last December's tsunami. Some of the structures had wooden frames, which facilitated the fire spreading to many clusters rapidly, residents said. The fire and rescue services department received the alert around 12.15 p.m. More than 40 vehicles, including 18 fire tenders from Tiruvottiyur and Manali, fought the blaze for two hours to bring it under control. No casualty was reported in the blaze though individual residents said they lost clothes, utensils and valuables, including jewellery. Senior Ministers visited the spot to oversee relief operations. A resident, Senthilkumar (28), said his sister's marriage was to take place on Friday and he had kept Rs. 50,000 in cash and 15 sovereigns of jewellery in the shelter. This was destroyed in the blaze. Only two days ago, 35 structures were burnt down in a fire on Monday afternoon. The likely cause of both incidents is under investigation, fire service and police officials said. V.Madurapandian, Deputy Director, Fire and Rescue Services (North), said after Monday's fire accident at Kargil Nagar, a fire tender had been stationed at the site to attend to emergency calls. This vehicle was not in the area on Wednesday. As the structures were in a low-lying area, it took a while for the fire tenders to reach the place.
