KOTTAYAM: The plantation sector in Kerala remained paralysed as the indefinite strike called by the Joint Action Council of the plantation trade unions demanding wage revision started on Wednesday. Spokesman for the Association of Planters in Kerala too conceded that the strike was total and peaceful. The labourers were already on strike in most of the plantations in Peermade taluk, as the managements of a few of the plantations, who had agreed to open their plantations and pay an advance of Rs. 1,000 in addition to the sustenance allowance of Rs. 300 a week, refused to fulfil their obligations. In addition to private plantations, labourers in the public sector plantations under Plantation Corporation of Kerala Ltd., Farming Corporation and Rehabilitation Plantation also struck work on Wednesday.
