Fernandes doubtful of emergence of third front

GULBARGA: The former Defence Minister and convener of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), George Fernandes, is sceptical about the emergence of a viable third front.

Mr. Fernandes told mediapersons here on Wednesday that the chances of a viable third force being formed to challenge the Congress and the BJP were dim because ideology had taken a back seat in politics. There should be commonality of thought and immediacy of action among political parties if a third front was to emerge. Mr. Fernandes said that the coming together of the Janata Parivar was doubtful and ruled out an alliance with the Janata Dal (Secular) in the State and at the national level because it had a tie-up with the Congress. On the violence in Jammu and Kashmir, Mr. Fernandes said that the lull in the activities of terrorists was deceptive.
