KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said here on Wednesday that he was hopeful of a solution soon to end the Jadavpur University stalemate. A section of the students is protesting against the police assault on Friday night on some of them who were on a hunger strike. Mr. Bhattacharjee said he had talked to Vice-Chancellor A.N. Basu and asked about the progress of a committee inquiring into the events leading to the police action. The committee, comprising five teachers, had been asked to submit a report within a week. It would soon hold talks with the students and their union. A union spokesman welcomed the decision and described it a ``moral victory.'' The Chief Minister has already asked a senior official to probe the circumstances leading to the police action. In a fresh development, students of the science faculty joined the semester boycott by those of the engineering and arts departments. The authorities have expressed concern over the move and urged the agitating students not to complicate the situation.
