THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Wednesday that Government had achieved a record in paddy procurement this year. Denying criticisms about paddy procurement, the Chief Minister told presspersons that the Government had procured 1.61 lakh metric tonnes of paddy this year. This had been the highest ever since the Government had started paddy procurement eight years ago. The amount spent - Rs. 17.89 crores, was also the highest in nine years. Mr. Chandy also noted that during the previous years, the Government had not brought any paddy from cooperatives, which procured the commodity. They had to dispose of the stock by themselves. This year, the State Civil Supplies Corporation had decided to buy 45,000 tonnes of paddy from cooperatives. The Corporation had honoured all requests up to May 3. Though some societies might have failed to register with the Corporation in time, it would not be possible for the Corporation to buy more paddy as the system was likely to be misused. The Government had received reports about attempts to bring paddy from Tamil Nadu for sale to the Corporation. However, if the societies already registered with the Corporation did not supply 45,000 tonnes, other requests could be considered.
MLAs' resignation
The Chief Minister discounted reports about plans of some Congress members of the Assembly, owing allegiance to the senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran to resign their membership. "We are hearing about resignations for long now. Ask me (for reaction) after they have actually resigned."
