THRISSUR: National Congress (Indira) chairman K. Karunakaran has said that Congress MLAs loyal to him will resign the moment they are forced to vote for the Oommen Chandy Government in the Assembly. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Karunakaran said that under no circumstance these MLAs would vote for the Chandy regime which was following anti-people policies. The anti-defection law curtails the freedom of MLAs. They cannot act as per their conscience and have to abide by the directives of the party they belong to, till the next elections. ``So it will not be possible to vote against the Government as long as the [Anti-Defection] Act prevails. But voting in favour of a corrupt regime, like the present one, will be disastrous for the people. So the MLAs will step down when such a situation arises. There will be no question of delaying the resignation fearing disciplinary actions. ... when will the resignations be submitted and how it is to be done will be decided by the political leadership,'' Mr. Karunakaran said. Replying to questions, Mr. Karunakaran said the resignation of the NC(I) MLAs en masse would have an impact on the Government whenever there is an election. ``I challenge Mr. Chandy to make the MLAs loyal to him resign and stand for elections. Our MLAs also will stand for elections. None of Mr. Chandy's will get elected, while all our MLAs will be elected,'' he said, Replying to questions on Left Democratic Front convener Paloli Mohammed Kutty's reported remarks that the Front and the Communist Party of Indian (Marxist) have not decided to ally with the Congress in the next Assembly elections, Mr. Karunakaran said the NC(I) would consider the question of alliance only when the election is round the corner. The NC(I)'s strategy will be to keep off communal forces and the Chandy group from power.
