President arriving on July 18

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will visit Kerala on July 18 and 19.

Talking to presspersons after a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the President's programmes here had not been finalised. It is yet to be decided whether Dr. Kalam would address members of the State Assembly during the visit. — Special Correspondent

Move to rename railway station

Thiruvananthapuram: Revenue Minister K.M. Mani said here on Wednesday that the State Government would request the Railway Ministry to rename the Varkala railway station as `Varkala-Sivagiri.' Chairing a meeting of the State Names Authority, he said the decision was taken in view of the recognition of Sivagiri as an international pilgrim centre. The meeting decided to rename the Kurikode station as `Chottanikara Road.' Revenue Principal Secretary John Mathai and Survey of India Director Subba Rao were among those who attended the meeting.— Staff Reporter

Date extended

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The last date for submitting applications to the first year courses at the vocational higher secondary schools in the State has been extended to June 22. Applications can be had till this date from the respective schools. The rank lists would be published on July 2 and admissions would be held from July 6 to 8. All procedures relating to admission should be completed by July 11, a pressnote issued here on Wednesday said.

Financial aid granted

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A.P. Anil Kumar, Minister for Cultural Affairs, has sanctioned Rs.25,000 to the next of kin of singer Brahmanandan who passed away. The assistance was sanctioned in response to a petition from Brahmanandan's wife, A.R. Usha, to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy citing financial problems following the death of her husband. The amount will be paid by the State Chalachitra Academy. — Special Correspondent

Special train to Egmore

Thiruvananthapuram: Southern Railway will run a special train between Nagercoil and Chennai-Egmore on June 24 to clear the extra rush of passengers. According to a press note, 604 Nagercoil-Egmore Special will leave Nagercoil at 1.30 p.m. on June 24 to reach Chennai-Egmore at 4.30 a.m. the next day. The train will run via Madurai, Tiruchi and Villupuram. The special train will have stoppages at Tirunelveli, Vanchi-Maniyachi, Kovilpatti, Satur, Virudunagar, Madurai Junction, Kodaikanal Road, Dindigul, Tiruchi, Vridhachalam,Villupuram, Chengalpatt, Tambaram and Mambalam. — Staff Reporter

Assumes charge

Kochi: Sathi Nair has assumed charge as vice-chairman in the Central Administrative Tribunal, Ernakulam branch. She was working as vice-chairman in the Chennai branch of the Tribunal. She had retired as Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh. She had held several senior positions in the Andhra Pradesh Government and at the Centre, says a release. — Special Correspondent

Applications invited

KOLLAM: The TKM College of Engineering has invited applications for the part time Post-Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications conducted by the sub-centre of the Centre for Continuing Education, Government of Kerala. The classes will be held at the TKM College of Engineering. Graduates in any discipline with 45 per cent marks can apply. The last date for submitting applications is June 30. Plantation workers' stir

PATHANAMTHITTA: An indefinite strike launched on Wednesday by plantation workers was total in the district. The strike by the workers owing allegiance to the INTUC, CITU, AITUC and UTUC reportedly crippled the functioning of various rubber plantations in the district. According to trade union sources, as many as 30,000 workers joined the agitation, affecting the smooth functioning of the plantations in the hilly tracts of Lahai, Konni, Chengara, Kodumon and Chandanappally. — Staff Reporter

Common placement test held

Thrissur: A common placement test was conducted by 14 major IT companies at Sahridaya College of Engineering and Technology at Kodakara, near here, on Sunday. As many as 108 students took the test, according to a press release. — Staff Reporter

Inaugural conference

KOTTAYAM: The inaugural conference of the Kerala political Science Association will be held here on Thursday. Dean E McHenry Jr., professor, Department of Politics and Policy, will inaugurate the association and deliver the keynote address on "Struggle Against Bush's Domestic and International Policy in Americas". The former vice-chancellor of MG University Cyriac Thomas will inaugurate the V.K. Sukumaran Nayar Memorial Lecture on the occasion. The lecture on GATS and Education will be delivered by B. Ekbal, former vice-chancellor Kerala University. — Staff Reporter

Music workshop

Palakkad: Swaralaya will organise workshop on Hindustani music here on July 16 and 17. The workshop will be on various ragas, thabala, sitar, gazal, jas etc. Those artists who will conduct the workshop include Ramesh Narayanan, Anand Badamikar (Sholapur), Ullas Kashakal (Pune), Pandit Vinayaka Thavri (Kirana Gharana) among others. Arrested

PALAKKAD: The Town South Police arrested 15 Yuva Morcha activists who marched to the District Office of the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) in the Collectorate here on Wednesday to protest against the lathi-charge on their activists in the capital on Tuesday. The activists gheraoed the district officer and disrupted the functioning of the PSC office. .— Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD: Judge of Kerala High Court Justice K. Thankappan will inaugurate a Fast Track Court at a function in the district court here on July 18. The meeting will be presided over by Justice K.T. Shankaran, Judge of Kerala High Court. — Staff Reporter
