LUCKNOW: The employees of the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) have called for an indefinite strike from June 17 to protest privatisation of Anpara `C' Thermal Power station. The joint action committee of the employees and engineers have threatened to go on strike from Friday, when the representatives of bidders of private power companies visit Anpara `C' site for an on-the-spot inquiry. Joint action committee spokesperson Shailendra Dubey said here on Wednesday that the employees would not allow entry of the representatives of the private power companies at Anpara. ``We have informed the officials and Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav about our decision in this regard.'' Regretting the decision of employees, UPPCL spokesman maintained it was ``uncalled for and unreasonable'' as proposed privatisation was neither retrenchment-oriented nor against the interest of the employees. Meanwhile, the UPPCL had sought additional security arrangements at Anpara in view of the visit by representatives of private power companies and the strike call. The Engineers of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) have been asked to stand by to run the state-owned thermal power stations, in case of strike by the employees. Representatives of four private power companies -- Reliance Energy Generation Limited, Mumbai, Lanco Kondapalli Power Pvt Company, Hyderabad, AEC & Torrent Power Ltd, Ahmedabad and Essar Power Limited, Mumbai -- have bid for the Rs 1,000-crore Anpara `C' Thermal power station to generate 1,000 megawatt of power. There is power shortage of about 2000 MW in the peak hours and several towns of the State have to face power cut. The decision of the employees and engineers would further aggravate the problem of the people. -- UNI
