KOTTAYAM: Total chaos prevailed at the Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital on Wednesday as fire broke out in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Ward II Medicine on Wednesday evening . Though there were only four patients in the ICU during that time, the presence of mind shown by those present outside the ICU saved their lives. According to MCH authorities, no one was injured in the fire. The fire and smoke coming out of one of the air-conditioners were first noticed by the duty nurse who ran out and informed others. Some of them ran into the ICU and helped the four patients out of the room. They then put off the AC and poured water into the ICU. The Fire Force too was pressed into service. The accident was noted by 5.30 p.m. According to Fire Force sources, old wiring for the air-conditioners might have caused short circuit which resulted in the mishap.
