Suspension of medical college students revoked

Staff Reporter

Students call off three-day agitation

KOZHIKODE: Principal of Kozhikode Medical College V. Geetha has revoked the suspension of two students M. Sajeesh and Anish George, who have been accused of attacking two radiographers on Monday.

The decision was taken on the basis of an interim report submitted by a four-member panel headed by P.K. Sasidharan, Professor of Medicine, on Wednesday. Following the decision, the medical students called off their three-day agitation that included sit-in protests and detaining the Principal in her cabin.

Sajeesh, who is also the Calicut University Union chairman, and Anish, who is the Medical College Union chairman, had been suspended for allegedly disrupting the functioning of the radiology wing and assaulting two radiographers.

However, the interim report had exonerated both of them of the charges, Dr. Geetha said.

The four-member panel collected evidences from the students, the staff of the Radiology Department, radiographer Shaji Thomas, who has been placed under suspension on the charges of molesting a second year MBBS student, and another assaulted woman radiographer Sali Lukose.

Head of Department of Radiology C.K.Vasu and the radiographers had requested the Principal to conduct an inquiry into the violent agitation on Monday. It was then that the Principal constituted a panel to inquire into the incident.

The interim report, it is learnt, stated that two students were not directly involved in the incident.

The radiographer had not been able to identify these students among the attackers, one of the panel members said.

Besides, the report also pointed out that it was improper to take action against two students when scores of students had participated in the agitation demanding action against the radiographer.

The final report will be submitted in a couple of days.

Till the decision to revoke the suspension was taken on Wednesday evening, the protesters belonging to the Students Federation of India (SFI) carried on with their strike at the medical college.

The internal examination was also affected on account of the strike.

Meanwhile, the three-member committee headed by MCH Additional Superintendent P.V. Narayanan, appointed to inquire into the alleged sexual harassment charges, had submitted an incomplete report to Dr. Geetha through MCH Superintendent V.R. Rajendran.

The committee comprising Padmaja Krishnan and O.T. Basheer had not been able to collect evidences of all the parties involved in the case, sources said.

It is learnt that the Principal left for the State capital while the Additional Superintendent left for Delhi.

At the same time, two more committees constituted by the Superintendent and the Director of Medical Services are likely to come into force to inquire into the recent incidents at the MCH.

The Medical College police have registered a case against Shaji Thomas on charges of sexually harassing the girl student when she went to take her X-ray last month.

A case has also been registered against the students for manhandling the radiographers.
