Rupee declines

MUMBAI: After the overnight breather, the rupee on Wednesday once again came under pressure and lost five paise due to renewed dollar demand on the back of a resurgent overseas with the outlook uncertain following firm global oil prices.

In generally nervous trading at the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee closed at 43.6500/6550 a dollar, sharply lower from Tuesday's close of 43.60/61 after hitting the day's low of 43.66/67 in afternoon deals.

It opened on a distinctly weak note at 43.64/66, reflecting the overnight surge in dollar to new nine-month high against the Euro.

The rupee rallied by six-and-half paise yesterday after sliding by 14 paise to ten-day closing low of 43.6650/6750 a dollar on Monday.

World crude oil prices have risen to $55.55 a barrel ahead of the OPEC meeting to decide on production ceiling.

Rupee sentiment had turned negative due to a slowdown in foreign fund inflows, widening trade deficit, rising global oil prices and the delay in the arrival of monsoon, bankers said.
