EASTBOURNE: Second seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, the defending champion, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Hastings Direct International Championships, beating compatriot Anna Chakvetadze 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(5). Italian Roberta Vinci also advanced to the last eight beating Vera Zvonareva 6-2, 7-6(5). Marion Bartoli too made it to the quarterfinals with a 6-, 6-4 win over Lisa Raymond.
Petrova, Safina advance
Nadia Petrova and Dinara Safina both advanced on Wednesday to the quarterfinals of the Ordina Open with straight-set victories. French open semifinalist Petrova defeated Argentina's Mariana Diaz-Oliva 6-3, 6-4. The second-seeded Russian broke Diaz-Oliva's first service game in the first set to take a 3-0 lead.The fourth-seeded Safina won the last four points of the second-set tiebreaker to beat Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 7-6(2). In the men's event, Philipp Kohlschreiber ousted fifth-seeded Robin Soderling 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(9). Meanwhile, Kim Clijsters defeated Jelena Jankovic of Serbia-Montenegro 6-1, 7-6(2) on Tuesday to reach the second round at Eastbourne in her first grass-court match in two years. Jankovic came close to winning the first four games but instead found herself trailing 3-1. Clijsters soon broke again for 5-1 and served out the set, but she then lost eight of the first nine points in the second set. The 17th-ranked Clijsters broke back, however, and went on to win the eventual tiebreaker.
Ljubicic advances
Top-seeded Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia defeated Romania's Victor Hanescu 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(8) in the opening round of the 10tele.com Open at Nottingham. Defending champion Paradorn Srichaphan advanced on his 26th birthday, beating qualifier Mark Hilton 6-3, 6-2. Paradorn was presented with a cake on court after his first-round win in blustery conditions.
