GURGAON: Kamala Kannan recovered from an indifferent start to power past Navdeep Singh 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the pre-quarterfinals of the ITF Satellite tennis circuit third leg at the NTA Complex here on Wednesday. Kannan takes on the top-seeded Rohan Bopanna who blew past the challenge from Yew Ming Si of Malaysia. Vishnu Vardhan continued to impress as he stroked his way past the sixth-seeded Gurmehar Singh, the semifinalist of the first leg who has since found the going tough in a competitive field. In another lively fare, the fifth-seeded Vinod Sridhar stopped a late revival by a vastly improved Tushar Liberhan to win in a second set tie-break. He will challenge the third-seeded Prima Simpatiaji of Indonesia who warded off a stiff threat from the fluent serve and volley game of Vishaal Uppal after losing the first set in the tie-break. Qualifier Nitin Kirtane continued with his good run and outplayed Ashutosh Singh for the loss of three games. Vijay Kannan squandered two setpoints in the tenth game of the first set to eventually be beaten in straight sets by the second-seeded Peter Clarke of Ireland. To be fair, the Irish lad was too good with his big serves when it mattered to recover ground and run away with the match. Clarke came up with 15 aces in all and four of them in what proved to be the last game in sewing up the contest. The results: Singles (pre-quarterfinals): Rohan Bopanna bt Yew Ming Si (Mas) 6-2, 6-3; Kamala Kannan bt Navdeep Singh 3-6, 6-3, 6-2; Nitin Kirtane bt Ashutosh Singh 6-3, 6-0; Nima Roshan bt Dmitri Makeev (Kaz) 7-5, 7-5; Vinod Sridhar bt Tushar Liberhan 6-4, 7-6(4); Prima Simpatiaji (Ina) bt Vishaal Uppal 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2; J. Vishnu Vardhan bt Gurmehar Singh 6-3, 6-3; Peter Clarke (Irl) bt Vijay Kannan 7-6(5), 6-1. Doubles (quarterfinals): Rohan Bopanna and Vijay Kannan bt Salifu Mohammed (Gha) and Guillaume Tarralle (Fra) 6-3, 4-6, 6-2; Hayato Furukawa and Tetsuhiro Yamamoto (Jpn) bt Tushar Liberhan and Navdeep Singh 6-2, 7-6 (7); Yew Ming Si (Mas) and Prima Simpatiaji (Ina) bt Nitin Kirtane and Vishaal Uppal 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (3); Jaco Mathew and Ashutosh Singh bt Saketh Sai Myneni and P. C. Vignesh 6-2, 6-1.
