MYSORE: The controversy over shifting pigs from the city limits took a new turn with pig rearers staging a protest against the Mysore City Corporation's proposal and accused animal catchers of selectively targeting the animals. Nearly 100 animal rearers, who came under the banner of Jai Bhuvaneshwari Pig Owners' Association, staged a dharna in front of the corporation office and raised slogans against the authorities. The members alleged that the leaders spearheading the drive are selectively targeting animals belonging to their rivals. They also alleged that they are selling the pigs instead of moving them to the animal shelter at Rayanakere. Taking exception to the drive launched by the corporation, the association members bemoaned lack of basic facilities at the new pig rearing centre on the outskirts of the city. They said that they will not shift their animals to the new shelter unless the corporation provides basic amenities, including water and power supply.
Farce
Meanwhile, members of the Mysore Grahakara Parishat and the Mysore Agenda Task Force have dubbed the ongoing drive and the corporation's efforts to make Mysore "pig-free" a farce. In a press release, the two organisations said that though the Mayor had announced that stray pigs in the city will be shot, nothing concrete has been done to eliminate the menace.
