BANGALORE: Preliminary inquiries by the police have revealed that the Rs. 1.28 crore in cash seized by the Kengeri Police in the early hours of Tuesday belonged to gold merchants from Kozhikhode in Kerala. The Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), M.C. Narayana Gowda, told The Hindu on Wednesday that the money is suspected to have been routed through the hawala channel. He also said that the money was possibly meant for purchase of gold biscuits. The Kengeri Police have arrested three persons, Zianuddin, M.K. Mohammed and Nasir, all from Kerala, in this connection. They are on the lookout for three others, who are at large, Mr. Narayana Gowda said. Around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, Kembe Gowda, a Sub-Inspector attached to the Kengeri Police Station, tried to stop an autorickshaw carrying four passengers on Mysore Road. As the driver sped away, the police chased the vehicle. They saw some people getting off the autorickshaw in front of a transport company near the R.V. College of Engineering. They were dumping some bags into a truck that was loaded with cartons containing chocolates and biscuits. On seeing the police, three of them fled, police said. On finding that the bags contained cash, the police arrested the driver and cleaner of the truck and a person who had come in the autorickshaw. The police are ascertaining the identities of the gold merchants to whom the cash belonged, Mr. Narayana Gowda said.
