Govt. firm on helmet rule

Staff Correspondent

The main aim is to protect lives: Kharge

BELGAUM: The State Government has finally accorded permission to the Home Department to make wearing helmets compulsory for two-wheeler riders, the Minister for Transport and Water Resources, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, has said.

He was talking to presspersons after inspecting the progress of the Markandeya irrigation project near Shirur village, 35 km from here, on Wednesday.

Replying to queries, he said that only about 200 objections had been received on the helmet rule.

However, many States, including Delhi, had made wearing helmets compulsory in the interests of the people. The Government has no interest other than protecting the lives of the people, he said.

The State Government may consider sanctioning a Rs.70-crore loan to the loss-making North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC). However, the final decision will depend on the repayment capacity of the corporation, he said.
