HYDERABAD: Philips, the lighting and consumer appliances giant will soon be called Philips Electronics India Limited, following the merger of three of its divisions, said K. Ramachandran, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director and CEO. On Wednesday, an independent display of its products at the Permanent Technology Centre in CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre was inaugurated in Mr. Ramachandran's presence by the company's Senior Vice-President, Corporate Sustainability Office, Henk de Bruin. Three companies -- Philips Medical Systems, Philips Software and Philips India -- are being merged into Philips Electronics India Limited. The court procedures for the merger were through and shortly the name change would come into effect, Mr. K. Ramachandran told presspersons later. Dr. Henk de Bruin and Mr. Ramachandran said the 114 year-old global giant was going through a makeover. The company wanted to move from simply being known for lighting systems, televisions and audio systems, to one that was into healthcare and lifestyle. "With sustainability as the basis, we wish to improve quality of everyday life for people globally", he said. Dr. Henk said sustainability was like juggling with three balls -- economic, social and environmental issues -- simultaneously. This was the only way companies would stay afloat and be remembered for hundreds of years, he said. As Philips as a brand turned 75 this year, the Platinum Jubilee would be commemorated by the 1,500 design professionals at the R and D Centre in Bangalore moving onto a new campus. "We would like to see this head count go up to 2,500 by the year 2007", Mr. Ramachandran said.
