Counselling put off for filing memo

CHITRADURGA: D. Manjunath, Minister for Higher Education, has hoped that the professional college seat selection process for regular candidates will begin shortly. Addressing presspersons at Hiriyur, about 45 km from here on Wednesday, he said the seat selection process and the admission-round will be completed before August. ``The counselling for regular candidates has been postponed because of a technical problem, which will be addressed at the earliest. The Government and managements of private colleges have to file a joint memo before the Supreme Court about seat sharing. So we did not have any other option but to postpone the counselling,'' he explained.

Bank conference on Saturday

GULBARGA: The first-ever State-level conference of the State Bank of Hyderabad Staff Association will be inaugurated by the joint secretary of the All-India Bank Employees' Association, M. Anjani, here on Saturday. According to N.S. Lorry owners threaten strike

Bangalore: The Federation of Karnataka Lorry Owners' Association has urged the State Government to evolve a clear policy on sand transportation to Bangalore. The association president, B. Channa Reddy, told presspersons that the Government should initiate steps to check alleged harassment of sand transporters by police and revenue officials. He alleged that officials and some people and associations are collecting bribes from transporters.

He said sand transporters will go on strike if the Government fails to respond to the demands by June 20.

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Gazetteer has invited applications from eligible candidates for the post of surveyors at the district level. The surveyors will locate and register rare documents with cultural and historical value under the Centre's programme, National Mission for Manuscripts.

Demand on English teaching opposed

Bangalore: The Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha has opposed the demand being made in some quarters for teaching English in government schools from first standard. Expulsion of BJP MLAs sought

SHIMOGA: The Shimoga district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has urged the party leadership to expel the MLAs Hartalu Halappa and Beluru Gopalakrishna from the party.

The unit adopted a resolution in this regard at a recent meeting, according to press note here. The note said that the speakers at the meeting alleged that Mr. Halappa and Mr. Gopalakrishna worked for the success of the Samajwadi Party candidate, S. Bangarappa, in the Shimoga Lok Sabha byelection.

Vedike's charge against mutt

Udupi: The Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike and the Karnataka Janapara Vedike on Tuesday alleged that 22 families on Mattadakudru island near Udyavar in Udupi district had no basic facilities such as electricity and tap water because of the attitude of Admar Mutt, to which the island belonged.

Addressing presspersons here, the convener of the vedike, Sriram Divana said earlier there were 50 families on the island.

The lack of facilities was forcing the people there to leave the place.

These families had been living on the island for generations and they had ration cards and election photo identity cards.

He warned that the vedike would be forced to launch an agitation if the mutt did not change its attitude. — Staff Correspondent

Installation of solar units

DHARMASTHALA: The regional rural banks (RRBs) have taken the lead in financing the installation of solar units in the State, according to L.H. Manjunath, executive director, Srikshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP).

Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of a four-day South-South REDCO (Rural Energy Delivery Companies) exchange programme which began here on Tuesday, Mr. Manjunath said that because of the efforts of RRBs many homes and other places in the coastal and Malnad areas and also some parts of central Karnataka have adopted the solar lighting system.

Painters from Bangalore electrocuted

MANGALORE: Two persons engaged in painting at the main branch of State Bank of India were electrocuted here on Wednesday. While one of them died on the spot, the other who suffered burns has been admitted to the government Wenlock Hospital.

The victim has been identified as Lazar (37) of Adugodi, Bangalore, while the name of the other person was given as Jesudas of Koramangala, Bangalore. Staff Correspondent

Assist farmers: bank chairman

Belgaum: The chairman of Malaprabha Grameena Bank, B.S. Surendra, has asked the branch managers to extend timely financial assistance to farmers to enable them to commence agricultural operations.

Speaking after inaugurating the `Performance budget meeting' of branch managers of Bailhongal and Belgaum areas here on Tuesday, he said the bank with 108 branches in Belgaum district, planned to contribute to the development of the district in its own way. — Staff Correspondent

Farmers stage rasta roko

Kolar: Enraged over the suspension of procurement of tomato through the APMC, farmers resorted to rasta roko near Malur bypass for over two hours on Tuesday.

The agitators blocked the road and demanded that the decision be revoked.

Byalahalli Govinda Gowda, convenor of the District Farmers' Forum, and Holur Shankar, general secretary of the Prantha Raitha Sangha, prevailed upon the APMC authorities to procure the commodity. — Correspondent

Award for artist

GULBARGA: The Indian Royal Academy of Art and Culture has selected Padmashree Hegde of Uttara Kannada district for an honorary award in visual art.

The award is given to an artist who does not have a formal training in the field of visual and performing art.

The president of the Indian Royal Academy of Art and Culture, Rehaman Patel, in a press release said here on Wednesday that the award carries a gold medal and a certificate.

Ms. Padmashree Hegde, who hails from Bidrakan village in Siddapur taluk, is a self-made artist. — Special Correspondent

Demand for increase in seed subsidy

Bidar: Members of the Akhila Bharat Kisan Sabha staged a dharna demanding that the subsidy on seeds supplied to small and marginal farmers be increased to 50 per cent from the present 25 per cent. Protestors walked in a rally to the Deputy Commissioner's office and shouted slogans against the State Government.

The cost of seeds is increasing and poor farmers can no longer afford it. The Government must help farmers by providing seeds at subsidised prices, Baburao Honna said in a memorandum.

`Solve water crisis'

Bidar: The Karnataka Janapara Horata Samiti has demanded that the water scarcity problem in Janawada in Bidar taluk be addressed immediately.

People are suffering due to the acute water scarcity. We have submitted many memoranda to the gram panchayat secretary but nothing has been done, samiti president, Prakash Kushnoore, said in a memorandum to the Government.

No water supply today

SHIMOGA: There will be no water supply and cleaning work in the city on Thursday and Friday with the municipal workers attached to the Shimoga City Municipal Council deciding to join the State-level rally in Bangalore to press for their demands, according to the Municipal Commissioner, K.M. Electrocuted

HUBLI: A man was electrocuted on Wednesday in J.C. Nagar here when he stepped into a water tank to clean it. The victim has been identified as Husensab Nadaf, a native of Hattimattur village. The police said he stepped into the tank after switching on the water-pump to drain out water. The police suspect that Husensab must have come into contact with a live wire.
