`Miscreant' done to death by villagers

WARANGAL: Villagers of Kothapalli in Bhupalpalli mandal beat a miscreant to death when he, along with his associates, raided the village and attempted to attack the local public representative here late on Tuesday night.

According to the police, a property offender and pseudo naxalite, J. Janardhan, and his friend Ramesh of Lingala village of Regonda mandal came with another associate to the village at 11 p.m. They beat up a villager asking him the whereabouts of the MPTC member, Bhaskar Rao, and later ransacked a telephone booth. Bhaskar Rao, who escaped from the backdoor, mobilised the villagers. They tried to catch him but he escaped with one associate while the other, Ramesh, was caught by the villagers and done to death. They later set his two wheeler ablaze.__ Staff Reporter

Elected FAPCCI president

HYDERABAD: C.V. Atchut Rao was unanimously elected president and Sudhir Sanghi, senior vice-president of the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) at the annual general meeting held here on Wednesday for the year 2005-2006.

Mr. Atchut Rao was the senior vice-president last year while Mr. Sudhir Sanghi was the vice-president.__Special Correspondent

Restored RTPP unit trips again

CUDDAPAH: The Chief Engineer of Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant (RTPP), Rama Rao, formally switched on the second 210 MW unit of the first stage on Wednesday, but it tripped within a few minutes owing to a technical snag.

The RTPP second unit under the First Stage of two 210 MW units at Kalamalla, was shut down on April 21 due to acute water scarcity. The unit required 200 cusecs of water daily, but a steep fall in the water level in Mylavaram reservoir forced shut down of the second unit. A capital overhauling was performed it was restarted. . __ Staff Reporter

Heat wave to continue

VISAKHAPATNAM: Heat wave conditions prevailing over coastal Andrha Pradesh are likely to continue, according to the Cyclone Warning Centre here.

The southwest monsoon, which normally covers the entire State by June 10, did not advance after June 8 and the heat wave conditions were being experienced due to the hot north-westerly winds blowing over coastal AP arresting the sea breeze, a CWC bulletin said on Wednesday.

HYDERABAD: The Bharatiya Janata Party will organise a 24-hour hunger strike in seven Telangana districts on June 16 as part of its campaign, asking the State to take up with Maharashtra its irrigation projects on the Godavari.

Hike in TTD kitchen workers' pay

TIRUPATI: The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) management has agreed in principle to effect a three-fold hike in the pay of contract workers in the Srivari Potu (kitchen) at the Tirumala temple.The workers, who prepare over 50,000 `laddus' a day, currently draw a meagre daily wage of Rs.80. The same has now been increased to Rs.250. The hike is likely to be effected from next month's pay.

IAS officer being harassed: Kapunadu

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Kapunadu has accused some "feudal and capitalist forces" of harassing and tarnishing the image of officials belonging to backward classes communities.

Citing the example of an IAS officer, D.S. Murthy, Kapunadu leaders stated at a press conference here on Wednesday that not only false allegations were being made against him, but also petitions filed and reports published in newspapers. __Staff Reporter

Dacoits strike at village

NELLORE: Dacoits wearing masks created panic in Rallachelika village of Sangam mandal on Tuesday. When some of the villagers confronted the intruders, they were assaulted resulting in injuries. Later the culprits took away sarees and a TV from a house besides attempting to loot another house. Following the incident, the villagers kept vigil till next day morning. - Staff Reporter

Fire destroys three houses

NELLORE: Property worth more than Rs. 45,000 was lost in two fire mishaps in Nellore district. While at Gudur town, two thatched houses were lost, at Nayanapalli village of Rapur mandal, one house was totally damaged. Both incidents were said to be due to electric short circuit. - Staff Reporter

Hamalis seek wage hike

CUDDAPAH: Hamalis staged a dharna in front of the Assistant Labour Commissioner's office here on Wednesday demanding hike in wages, issue of identity cards and PF and ESI facilities to them.

Addressing the protesters, the CITU town general secretary, S. Siddharamaiah, said wage revision agreement for the hamalis working in a godown here was due in April 2004. While the management dilly-dallied, the Labour Department officials were lax, he alleged. The District Labour Officer, Janardhan Reddy, promsied to discuss with the private management and resolve the issue by June 27.

Seven huts gutted

CUDDAPAH: Seven thatched huts were gutted in Raghavendranagar in Porumamilla mandal on Wednesday. Labourers who lived in the huts lost their belongings, clothes and utensils. A fire tender rushed and put off the flames, but nothing was left to be salvaged. - Staff Reporter

Man electrocuted

CUDDAPAH: A labourer, Balayapalle Mahabub Basha (27), was electrocuted in his house at Eguva Thamballapalle village in Kalasapadu mandal on Tuesday night when he tried to switch on a motor. His wife, Rahmath Bi, who tried to pull him away, turned unconscious. - Staff Reporter

BSNL revises charge

TIRUPATI: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced that all calls made to "Walky", a mobile WLL service provided by TATA Teleservices, will be treated as calls made to "limited mobile" henceforth and as such the same will not be considered as fixed line anymore. In a release, the BSNL General Manager, A.Subba Rao, stated that calls originating from their fixed line (B-Fone) and WLL (Tarang) to the 'Walky' (starting with '55') would be charged at the rate of 45 seconds pulse. - Staff Reporter
