GUNTUR: Ayacutdars under Nagarjunasagar canals will receive water only in the second week of August as repair works to Right and Left canals will be taken up from June 17 at a cost of Rs. 30 crores.

At a review meeting with Irrigation Department officials here on Wednesday, the Minister for Cooperation, Kanna Lakshmi Narayana, asked the Irrigation Superintendent of Engineer (Lingamguntla), A. Raja Reddy, to ensure quality work was done meeting all time schedules for contracts.

Out of the Rs. 30 crores, Guntur district had received Rs.11.8 crores for NSP canals repair, and Rs. 8 crores for Krishna Western Delta Canals.

The work on repairs had begun in the Guntur Revenue division, but the tenders were finalised on June 12 in the Macherla and other divisions under the NSP.

    Monitoring

The Minister told the Superintending Engineer and the district Collector, G. Jayalakshmi, that he would monitor the quality of work along with its pace at least three times before completion on July 30, the deadline set by the Irrigation Department.

Contractors would be penalised if work was delayed beyond the stipulated time and payments stopped, Mr. Reddy, explained.

    Sanction for repairs

Mr. Kanna Lakshmi Narayana, said while Rs.10 crores was sanctioned for repairs in 2002-03, nothing was sanctioned in 2003-04 and works were of the worst quality.

There was breach every year in the Chandravanka section leading to delay of schedule by 15 days.

He ordered Irrigation Department officials to book criminal cases against farmers indulging in deliberate breaking of sluice gates and recover repair cost from them.

    Work schedule chart

The District Collector asked the Superintending Engineer to prepare a chart of work schedule and the officials responsible for maintaining the quality in the 85 works in 15 irrigation divisions. The Gurazala MLA, Janga Krishna Murthy, was present at the review meeting.
