GUNTUR: Some 700 farmers from various mandals of Guntur district have been asked to bring their chilli stocks to the agriculture market yard here to complete the process of procurement through the Markfed Market Intervention Scheme-2005. The Markfed on Wednesday completed the original schedule of procurement from 4,950 farmers in the second phase and had procured 8,000 tonnes so far, the Markfed Zonal Manager, Harigopalam, told The Hindu .
Allegation denied
The procurement from remaining 700 farmers (295 Guntur revenue division and rest of the district) would be completed in a week, he said. The allegations that the buyers were demanding money for passing the lots was not correct, he added. Any person bringing good quality stocks need not approach anyone, it would be automatically accepted.
40 p.c. rejections
There were 40 per cent rejections among the stocks offered to the Markfed, he observed. The backlog of 250 farmers from the second phase was completed on Wednesday, who were to have been entertained by June 4.
Prices drop
The prices in the open market however, plummeted on Wednesday with the highest variety of chillies from the air-conditioned stocks were offered only Rs. 1,800 per quintal at the peak. While the open stocks attracted only Rs. 1,100 to Rs.1,400 per quintal.
