Vijayawada
Special Correspondent
VIJAYAWADA: : The Communist Party of India (CPI) State Secretariat member, E. Nageswara Rao, criticised the TDP and the Congress for their "failure" in taking up planned development of the city and solving problems faced by the common man. Participating in the protest demonstration organised by the CPI city unit in front of the Circle III office here on Wednesday, Mr. Rao said there were plenty of opportunities to develop Vijayawada as a major industrial and investment destination as the city had the busiest railway junction as well as the biggest RTC bus station, in addition to its location abutting two major national highways. However, the absence of a planned approach by the officials concerned was hindering the development of the city, he added.
Twin causes
The official indifference as well as the increasing population resulted in the slow pace of development of the city, which attained the status of a corporation two decades ago. The development came to a standstill during the last one decade since the TDP came to power in the State, he alleged.
Indirect poll
Referring to other issues, Mr. Rao, who is also the editor of Visaalandhra Telugu daily, criticised the Government for its efforts to hold indirect elections to the urban local bodies, saying they would encourage corruption and horse trading. The All India Youth Federation State secretary, G. Eswaraiah, alleged the Congress Government that came to power after making several promises failed to fulfil them. Therefore, the Left parties had decided to mount pressure on the Government through agitations to solve the problems faced by the people, he added. The CPI city secretary, K. Sekhar Babu, presided over the meeting.
