VIJAYAWADA: The former director of Andhra Pradesh Scheduled Castes Cooperative Finance Corporation Limited, S. Ravindra Verma, has demanded that the State Government sanction scholarships to encourage students from the weaker section pursue education. In a press release issued here on Tuesday, Mr. Verma said though there were many programmes like Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and DPEP, the dropout rate among the weaker section students was still very high. Caught in poverty, their parents were not able to send them to good institutions. Scholarships would enable students of these sections to pursue studies without a break, he said. Mr. Verma felt the pre-matric scholarship, which was guaranteed by the Constitution, should be enhanced substantially and steps should be taken to see that all eligible weaker section students enjoyed the facility. The Government should sanction Rs. 300 to students from 1st to 5th classes, Rs. 400 for students from 6th to 8th classes and Rs. 500 for students of 9th and 10th classes. This should be made effective from this academic year, Mr. Verma said.
