GUNTUR: The hotels in Guntur city need to expand their facilities to offer not only the best in hospitality industry, but also of our region to foreign tourists attending the Kalachakra festival in January 2006, said the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Corporation secretary, Nagi Reddy. He was speaking at a meeting with the hotel owners of the city, arranged by the district administration, in view of the festival. He suggested that the hotels go in for accreditation according to their standards and promised his help in the matter. "The hotel owners should give preference to genuine pilgrims during the season, as there could be possible exploitation by tour operators," said the District Collector, G. Jayalakshmi. The future in the tourism sector was bright and so there was a great need to develop the Buddhist circuit in the district, she added. Representatives from the hotel industry expressed their inability to go for expansion in such a short time, as it requires huge investment and time. Some travel agents were adopting unethical methods to make reservations during the season, said the Vajrams' Residency general manager, Raja Reddy.
`Spell out guidelines'
The representatives wanted the Government to come out with a clear set of guidelines, at least a month before the festival for better services to the tourists, especially foreigners. The Tourism Secretary promised to arrange a workshop at Guntur by the National Institute of Hotel Management for the hotel representatives. Later, Mr. Reddy held a review meeting with the heads of various Government departments on the progress of works in view of the Kalachakra. Representatives from Panchayati Raj, Roads and Buildings, Fire Services, Revenue, Police, Transport and other departments participated in the meeting.
