CHENNAI: A series of "Sound and Light" shows projects have got the Central financial sanction and would be executed during 2005-06. Giving details of the proposals sent by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation to the Union Tourism Ministry, Commissioner of Tourism and Managing Director of the Corporation Shaktikanta Das told The Hindu on Wednesday that Rs. 1 crore had been sanctioned for the "Sound and Light Show" at Thirumalainaicker Palace in Madurai. Under the Vivekananda Circuit scheme, the Centre has sanctioned Rs. 2 crores for the show at Vivekananda Rock Memorial and Tiruvalluvar Statue. The Kanyakumari and Madurai projects have been handed over to the India Tourism Development Corporation for execution. The Big Temple in Thanjavur will have a similar facility at a cost of Rs. 150 lakhs and the Centre is actively considering a similar facility at Mamallapuram, he said. Detailing the importance of the show, Mr. Das said that it would be an effective platform for disseminating information about the historical and cultural heritage of the tourist spot, besides helping the discerning tourists to extend their stay since the shows were held late in the evening. Apart from the Sound and Light shows, under the Destination Development proposal, Yercaud has been sanctioned Rs. 450 lakhs and the Phase-II Integrated Development of Mamallapuram has got Rs. 430 lakhs. With this Central assistance, Arjuna's Penance, a Balwadi and a high school, a new bus terminus and landscaping of the area around the Archaeological Society of India's office and creation of a craft bazaar will be developed. The Jain tourism circuit gets a boost with the Centre sanctioning Rs. 190 lakhs. Adi Sankara Circuit has also got a special impetus with assistance to the tune of Rs. 440 lakhs.
