CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has quashed the detention of Dalit leader Pasupathy Pandian under the Goondas Act, and directed the Tuticorin District Collector to set him at liberty. A Division Bench comprising Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice A.R. Ramalingam passed the order on a habeas corpus petition filed by Mr. Pandian's wife, Jesintha. Mr. Pandian was detained under the Act by an order dated July 25, 2004 as he was "found indulging in an activity prejudicial to the maintenance of public order." Mr. Pandian's counsel said that there was a delay in the disposal of the detenu's representation dated August 3, 2004, thereby vitiating the detention. The representation was rejected by the Minister for Prohibition and Excise on September 3, 2004 and sent to the Superintendent of Central Prison at Palayamkottai.
