CHENNAI: The tsunami-affected populace of North Chennai rehabilitated in temporary shelters in Kargil Vetri Nagar near Ennore, which were gutted in a fire on Wednesday, will be temporarily housed in an abandoned factory nearby. Slum Clearance Board officials said they were also considering erecting temporary shelters on land owned by a private company to house the affected families, numbering a little over 500. The abandoned factory in Ennore once used to be owned by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board and was used for production of celcrete, a construction material. The factory has been closed for more than a decade. Officials said the construction work for permanent tenements for the tsunami-affected families would begin soon at Kargil Vetri Nagar where the fire occurred. Law and Information Technology Minister D. Jayakumar and Housing Minister Anita R. Radhakrishnan visited Kargil Vetri Nagar on Wednesday after the blaze. Accompanying them were N. Balaganga, Chairman of the Slum Clearance Board, R. Thiagarajan, Deputy Mayor, C.V. Shankar, Officer on Special Duty, Tsunami Relief and Rehabilitation, and S. Chandramohan, Chennai Collector.
